- Cut flowers several hours before arranging and stand them in deep water.
- Strip leaves from stems below water.
- For flowers with woody stems, like stocks, chrysanthemums and wallflowers, remove lower leaves and bruise or split the ends of stems.
- Flowering shrubs, like lilac , elderflower, last longer if all the leaves are removed after they have been picked.
- Flowers which shed their petals, like poppies and geums should be picked while still in bud. Dip the ends in boiling water.
- Flowers with large leaves should be laid flat in a bowl of water overnight.
- Turn the stems of Lupins and delphiniums upside down and fill them with tepid water. Plug with cotton wool and place in a vase of warm water.
- Dip dahlia stems in glacial acetic acid.
- Daisy flowers should always be picked before they are fully open.
- With roses, remove the underwater thorns and leaves. Stand in a cool room.
- Daffodils need only half an inch of water.
- Tulip remains straight if rolled in newspaper and stood in water up to their necks over night.
