Tips For Fresh Flower

  1. Cut flowers several hours before arranging and stand them in deep water.
  2. Strip leaves from stems below water.
  3. For flowers with woody stems, like stocks, chrysanthemums and wallflowers, remove lower leaves and bruise or split the ends of stems.
  4. Flowering shrubs, like lilac , elderflower, last longer if all the leaves are removed after they have been picked.
  5. Flowers which shed their petals, like poppies and geums should be picked while still in bud. Dip the ends in boiling water.
  6. Flowers with large leaves should be laid flat in a bowl of water overnight.
  7. Turn the stems of Lupins and delphiniums upside down and fill them with tepid water. Plug with cotton wool and place in a vase of warm water.
  8. Dip dahlia stems in glacial acetic acid.
  9. Daisy flowers should always be picked before they are fully open.
  10. With roses, remove the underwater thorns and leaves. Stand in a cool room.
  11. Daffodils need only half an inch of water.
  12. Tulip remains straight if rolled in newspaper and stood in water up to their necks over night.
